MONARCH CAGERS FALL TO FDU 61-59, HAMMONDS THREE-POINT ATTEMPT AT BUZZER OFF THE MARK

MADISON, NJ -- Host FDU-Florhammade three-of-four shots from the foul line over the final 0:17 of the game and Kyle Hammonds game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark as the visiting King's College men's basketball team dropped a 61-59 heartbreaker Saturday in Madison, NJ.

With the win, King's slipped to 8-13 and 3-7 in the Freedom Conference while FDU improved to 10-11 and 5-5 in league play.

The game was closely played throughout as the lead changed eight different times while the scored was tied on 12 other occasions.

King's trailed 54-48 after FDU's Will Green converted a traditional three-point play on a bucket and foul shots with 5:44 left in the contest.

The Monarchs answered with a four straight foul shots from Ian Oakley over the next 2:09 to cut the Devil lead to 54-52 with 3:35 left in the contest. FDU answered with a driving lay-up by Adam Katz to push the score to 56-52 with 1:39 on the clock. After the teams traded misses on the next three possessions, Hammonds buried a three-pointer to cut the score to 56-55 with 0:39 on the clock.

King's would foul Mike Williamson with 0:31 remaining and the Devil guard converted both free throws to extend the Devil lead to 58-55. The Monarchs then countered when Hammonds drained another three-pointer and was fouled on the shot. The Monarch sophomore made good on the free throw to convert the four-point play as King's took a 59-58 with 0:24 to play.

But on the Devils next possession King's was whistled for an untimely foul and Katz went to the with 0:17 left and made both attempts to put the Devils on top 60-59.

With a chance to take the lead, King's committed a costly turnover with 0:08 on the clock and was forced to foul. From there, Green made the first shot but missed the second to give the Devils a 61-59 lead. The Monarchs advanced the ball to mid court where coach J.P. Andrejko frantically attempted to call a time out but game officials would not grant the stoppage of play and Hammonds was forced to launch a 25-footer which caromed off the rim at the buzzer as FDU held on for the victory.

It was a gutsy effort by a banged up Monarch squad as starters Keyton Winder and Kyle Stackhouse, the team's second and third leading scorers, both played despite missing Friday's practice with injuries. Winder managed eight points off the bench while Stackhouse, the team's point-guard, was limited to six points and one assist

Hammonds was the only Monarch to reach double-figures with 12 points while Nick Reisig tallied six points and 11 rebounds. Oakley made his first start of the season and tallied eight points and six rebounds while Tim O'Shea also added eight points and four boards.

Green led FDU with 19 points and 16 rebounds while Derek Hall added 13 points and nine boards.

King's returns to the court Wednesday when the Monarchs host Delaware Valley College at 8:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
