King's Baseball Drops Opening Pair of Freedom Conference Games to Manhattanville

KING'S BASEBALL DROPS PAIR IN FREDOM CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST MANHATTANVILLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The visiting Manhattanville College baseball team rallied from 2-0 down in the last inning to defeat King's College 3-2 in the opener of its Freedom Conference doubleheader Saturday at the Betzler Athletic Complex. The Valiants then built a 11-4 lead before holding off a King's last inning rally to win 11-9 and secure a sweep in the Freedom Conference openers for both teams.

In the opener, King's broke open a scoreless game in the fifth when Tim Marchetti singled and later scored on a run-scoring single by Rob Lemoncelli. The Monarchs built a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Chris Sweeney drilled a shot over the left field fence for s solo home runs, his second of the season.

In the seventh inning, however, Manhattanville when John Bucci smacked a leadoff double and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch. After Eli Tsouristakis walked and Matt Prunti singled, Kevin Brady delivered a two-run, two-out single to dive in the winning runs.

Joe Dorbad (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out 11 batters.

Sweeney had the lone extra base hit with his solo shot while Lemoncelli, Ric Acierno, Eric Bohem, Anthony Re and Marchelli all added singles for King's.

In the nightcap, the Monarchs trailed 11-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh and nearly pulled off a miracle comeback. Three King's hits combined by Bohem, Marchetti, pinch hitter Rich Bartumioli, with three Manhattanville errors, a hit batsman, and two walks drew the Monarchs to within 11-9 with two out and the bases loaded. But on his second plate appearance of the inning, Bohem flied out to left field to end the game.

Marchetti went 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI for the Monarchs Lemoncelli was 2-for-5 as King's posted 11 base hits.
