King's Baseball Falls to Eastern in Three-Game Series Opener, Saturday Doubleheader Moved to 11:30 AM

KING'S BASEBALL DROPS SERIES OPENER TO EASTERN

ST. DAVIDS -- The King's College baseball team opened a 3-0 first inning lead but host Eastern University scored 11 runs over the first four innings en route to a 15-5 victory in the opening matchup in a three-game weekend series Friday in St. Davids.

With the win eastern improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in the Freedom Conference while King's slipped to 5-8 and 1-3. The teams are slated to wrap up their three-game set with a Saturday doubleheader at King's Betzler Athletic Complex. In an attempt to beat the anticipated rain, the twin bill start time has been moved up to 11:30 a.m.

King's jumped to a first inning lead when Rob Lemoncelli singled and Chris Sweeney was hit by a pitch. Eric Bohem followed with a RBI double before Rich Acierno delivered a two-run single to put the Monarchs on top 3-0.

Eastern, however, responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, six runs in the third, and three more in the fourth to take a 11-3 lead. After a scoreless fifth, Eastern added three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to forge a 15-3 lead. The Monarchs added one run in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Brian Mikus, then plated the final run of the game in the ninth on a RBI infield ground out from Richie Bartumioli.


Monarch starting pitcher Joe Dorbad took the loss, allowing seven runs, six that were earned, on just three hits and six walks in two and two-thirds innings.

Acierno led King's by going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Bohem finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. Anthony Re joined Lemoncelli and Mikus with base hits.
