King's Baseball Splits Freedom Conference Doubleheader with Eastern
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-- The King's College baseball team split a pair of games against visiting Eastern University in Freedom Conference action Saturday afternoon at Lipo Field.
King's moved to 6-9 overall and are now 2-4 in the Freedom Conference, while Eastern is 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The Monarchs topped the Eagles in the opening game 13-5 on the back of a 10 runs explosion in the bottom of the second inning. The inning started with three staight singles from
Rich Acierno,
Brian Mikus and
Tim Marchetti.
Cody Krupa drove in a pair of runs with a double. Eric Bohm delivered the big blow with a two-out bomb over the right field fence for a three-run homer.
King's added an insurance run in the fourth when Marchetti knocked home Bohem with a single to right. Then added two more runs in the fifth on a two run single by Acierno.
Acierno finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bohem drove in three runs going 2-for4 and scoring two runs. Krupa also tallied three RBI on a pair of hits.
Brenton Eades picked up the in on the bump pitching a complete game with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Eades allowed 11 hits and five runs all earned.
In the second game Eastern rallied from a five runs deficit to win the game 10-7 in nine innings.
The Monarchs held a 7-2 lead after
Chris Sweeney belted a two run blast to left, but Eastern drew four straight walks in the top of the seventh and capped the rally with a three run double by Devon Ziegenfuss to tie the game.
Greg DeSarro led off the ninth with a fly ball to right field that Bohem couldn't handle after a hit batsman
Pat Matthews balked home the go-ahead run. Eastern tacked on two more insurance runs before the end of ninth.
Sweeney paced the Monarch offense in game two going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Bohem and Acierno each went 2-for-5 on the game.
Anthony Sangiardi got a no decision in his first start going five innings allowing two runs on four hits.
Levi Tate took the loss on the hill.
Next up for the Monarchs is a non-conference tilt with Penn College. The game starts at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
