Sweeney Homers Twice as King's Baseball Downs Delaware Valley
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-- The King's College baseball team got the bats rolling, including a pair of home runs from junior
Chris Sweeney, as the Monarchs defeated Delaware Valley 15-8 in Freedom Conferece play Friday at Lipo Field.
With the win King's improved to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in Freedom Conference play. The Aggies, meanwhile, slipped to 7-11 and 0-7.
The Monarchs held a 9-8 edge going to the bottom of the sixth after the Aggies picked up four runs in the top of the inning. Sweeney led off the seventh with a bang, smaching a solo blast off the scoreboard in right centerfield.
Eric Bohem and
Rich Acierno each singled and advanced on a wild pitch.
Brian Mikus plated Bohem with a sacrifice fly and Acierno scored on a single by
Tim Marchetti.
King's tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth. After two quick outs Sweeney struck again this time with an opposite field shot over the left center field fence. Bohem then doubled and scored on a double by Acierno. Mikus drove home Acierno with a single through the right side.
The offense got rolling early for the Monarchs as they pushed a run across in the bottom of the first and three more in the second. King's put up a three spot in the fourth as well keyed by a two-run triple off the bat of
Cody Krupa.
Sweeney finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI. Bohem chipped in with a 4-for-5 game, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Acierno contrinbuted with three hits, scored two runs and drove home another. Krupa was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple to go with two RBI.
Mike Ferrior led the way for Delaware Valley notching two hits and three RBI. Dan Hrubos posted a 2-for-5 day with a pair of RBI.
Brenton Eades got the win on the hill pitching 5.2 innings allowing 11 hits, eight runs, five earned, striking out five and walking three.
Ryan Gimbi gave King's 3.1 innings of shutout relief allowing just one hit and eight strikeouts to pick up the save.
The Monarchs are on the road Saturday to complete the three-game series with Delaware Valley. The game is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
