KING'S BASEBALL SWEEPS WILKES TO WIN SEASON SERIES
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College baseball team swept a doubleheader from cross-town rival Wilkes University on Saturday at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex. The Monarchs exploded in the first game for a 26-5 victory while taking the nightcap by a 7-4 count.
The sweep enabled King's to win their season series with Wilkes 2-1. In the process, the Monarchs improved to 11-17 overall and 5-10 in the Freedom Conference. Wilkes, meanwhile, fell to 11-120 and 3-12.
In the opener, King's jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The Monarchs added two run in each of the second and third innings, eight in the fourth, and seven more in the fifth to build a 25-5 lead after five innings.
Brian Mikus was 3-for-5 with four RBI to pace King's while
Chris Sweeney went 3-for-5 with four runs and three RBI, including a third inning home run.
Rob Lemoncelli was also 3-for-5 with four runs while
Tim Marchetti was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Anthony Re was 2-for—5 with three runs and two RBI while Rim Zaccone chipped in by going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Joe Dorbad picked up the win for King's, allowing three earned runs in seven complete innings with three strikeouts.
Scott Skammer was the lone Wilkes batter to reach multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
In the nightcap, King's took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, keyed by a RBI single from Bohem and a two-run triple by
Rich Acierno. Wilkes used the long ball to get back into the game as Joel Watson and Tay Sidler belted back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning before Matt Ruch launched another solo shot in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
King's responded in the bottom of the third when Sweeney singled and scored off a double by Bohem to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. King's a run in the fourth after a double by Jim Baczkowski and subsequent sacrifice fly by Re. The Monarchs upped the lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Bohem doubled and scored on a single from Mikus.
Wilkes scored a run in the sixth when Watson singled and later scored on an infield out by Carmen Lopresto to trim the lead to 6-4. But the Monarchs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Zaccone singled and eventually scored from second on a base hit by
Rob Lemoncelli.
Bohem was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Lemoncelli finished 3-for-4 with one run and a RBI. Sweeney went 2-for-3 with three runs scored while Acierno finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Anthony Sangirardi was the winning pitcher for the Monarchs, allowing four runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings.
Pat Matthews picked up the save after tossing one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
