KING'S BASEBALL SWEPT BY DESALES

CENTER VALLEY -- The host DeSales University baseball team overcame a 9-8 deficit with two runs in the eighth inning as the Bulldogs rallied for a 10-9 extra-inning victory over King's College to secure a doubleheader sweep Monday in Center Valley. DeSales won the first game by a 13-4 count.

With the sweep, DeSales improved to 19-8 overall and 11-1 in Freedom Conference play while King's slipped to 9-15 and 3-9 in league play.

In the opener, DeSales exploded for six runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Rich Acierno went 2-for-3 with two runs while Rob Lemoncelli was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Joe Dorbad took the pitching loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) in one and one-third innings while walking four batters.

In the nightcap, the Monarchs trailed 8-7 in seventh inning when Lemoncelli singled and moved to second on a base hit by Cody Krupa. Chris Sweeney then doubled to right center to plate Lemoncelli and tie the score at 8-8 as the game eventually headed into extra innings.

Acierno led off the eighth with a walk and moved to third when DeSales committed an error on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Mikus, giving the Monarchs runners at first and second with no outs. Tim Marchetti then successfully bunted both runners to second and third. After Anthony Re was walked intentionally to load the bases, Richie Bartumioli walked, driving in Acierno to put the Monarchs ahead 9-8.

After King's was unable to score again DeSales responded by loading the bases. With one out stroked a one-out, two-run walk-off single up the middle to give the Bulldogs the victory and the series sweep.

Sweeney led the Monarchs by going 4-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Lemoncelli was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI while Marchetti finished 2-for-3 with a run. Pat Matthews was the losing pitcher in relief, tossing two and one-third innings and allowing two runs on three hits.

King's returns to action Tuesday when the Monarchs host Susquehanna University at 4:00 p.m. in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
