Sweeney Earns Spot on Cal Ripken Summer League All-Star Team
Bethesda, Md.-- King's College outfielder
Chris Sweeney was selected to and played in the 2012 Cal Ripken Collegiate League All-Star Game July 11 at Shirley Povich Field.
The Cal Ripken League is a wooden-bat league founded in 2005 and for players under 23 years of age. There are 10 teams spread across the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Region with the majority of players competing at the NCAA Division I level. The teams complete in a 42-game season and the playoffs are a four-team double elimination tournament.
Through 28 games with the Alexandria Aces (14-15), Sweeney has batted .301 (31-103) with 22 RBI and 14 runs scored. Sweeney has belted nine doubles and a team-leading five home runs while playaing both first-base and in the outfield.
Sweeney made the most of his playing time, coming off the bench to go 1-for-1 with a one-out single in the fifth inning. He also recorded a put-out in his one defensive inning at first base. Sweeney replaced starter American all-star starter Brent Williams (University of Richmond) of the Vienna River Dogs. The American squad would eventually fall to the National all-star team 9-3.
In his junior season at King's, Sweeney posted a .391 batting average with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and a team-leading 43 runs scored. He was a first-team All-Freedom Conference selection and an American Baseball Coaches Association all-region selection.
