King's Women's Soccer Falls 4-2 to Alvernia

Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-- The King's College women's soccer team saw their comeback bid come up short as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Alvernia Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.

The Crusaders (4-1-1) opened the scoring with an unassisted tally from Bridget Verdel on a shot from the left sideline that carried just out of the reach of King's (1-3) keeper Lauren Duguid in the ninth minute. The Lady Monarchs knotted the game on when Ivy Nulton sprung Shania Dougherty at 22:25.

Alvernia answered right back on another Verdel tally just 27 seconds later. The Crusaders took a 3-1 lead to the half on a goal from Kelsey Gill in the 45th minute.

Rachel Gimber extended the Alvernia lead to 4-1 on a goal in the 64th minute assisted by Verdel. King's answered back when Nulton tallied her second assist crossing the ball to Lindsey Humanik who finished the play for her first career goal.

The Lady Monarchs out shot the Crusaders 11-8 inculding a 7-2 advantage in the second half. King's also attempted two corner kicks.

Duguid took the loss in net making a pair of saves in the first half. Maher made three saves for Alvernia.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday when they host Juniata College at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
