KING'S MEN'S SOCCER EDGES ALVERNIA 2-1

WILKES-BARRE -- The host King's College men's soccer team built a 2-0 lead and held off a late Alvernia College attempt to rally as the Monarchs posted a 2-1 triumph Wednesday night in the Betzler Athleetic Complex.

With the win, the Monarchs improved to 5-2-1 while Alvernia slipped to 5-2-3.


King's built a 1-0 lead when Chris Nygren struck net off an assist from Niall Croke 22:08 into the match. The Monarchs took a 2-0 advantage at 53:22 when Danny Hernandez scored on a putback off a rebounded shot by Tyler Garvin.

Alvernia cut the lead to 2-1 when Zack Wilson scored unassisted at 64:24. The Monarch defense did the rest and held off a furious Alvernia comeback bid over the final 15 minutes of play.

Alvernia outshot King's 10-9 while the Monarchs held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. King's goalie Brandon Raynor picked up the win, making two saves.

King's returns to action Saturday when the Monatrchs travel to Purchase, NY to face Manhattanville College at 3:30 p.m,
