KING'S WOMEN DOWN MISERICORDIA 74-61 BEHIND MICHAELS CAREER-HIGH 28

DALLAS – Katlin Michaels scored a career-high 28 points and the King's College women's basketball team held off a second-half comeback by host Misericordia University as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 74-61 road win Wednesday night in Dallas.

With the win, King's posted its ninth straight victory, improving to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in the Freedom Conference to remain in sole possession of second place. Misericordia, meanwhile,slipped to 9-8 and 3-4 in league play.

Misericordia opened a quick 4-0 lead on baskets bu Lauren Smicherko and Nikki Barro. King's countered with a 8-2 spurt to take a 8=6 lead on the strength of three points by Celia Rader and an inside basket by Lindsay Atchison.

After a Cougar bucket by Hannah Seeley, the Lady Monarchs responded with 9-2 run, ignited by a traditional three-point play from Katlin Michaels and three straight baskets by Molly Dahl, Rader, and Jen Fabian, giving King's a 17-10 lead with 10:07 left in the first half.

Following a pair of Misericordia baskets trimmed the score to 17-14, King's against answered with 12 straight points, with the final three baskets coming off a steal and lay-up by Michaels and a pair of offensive rebound put-backs by Rader and Dahl. The run allowed the Lady Monarchs to take a 29-14 lead with 5:25 remaining in the opening stanza.

The After the teams traded baskets, the Cougars used a 8-0 surge to cut the score to 32-22 after one-of-two foul shots from Seeley and a bucket by Baro with 0:35 to go. But King's countered with a pair of foul shots from Michaels with 0:09.5 left to give the Lady Monarchs a 34-22 lead at the break.

Michaels led King's with 11 points at the half while Rader followed with 10. Smicherko paced the Cougars with six points.

In the second half the Cougars came out of the locker room and went right to work with a 15-6 run to cut the kIng's lead tp 40-37 with 15:05 to play. King's then extended the lead to 49-44 on a bucket by Michaels and one-of-two free throws from Tiffany O'Donnell. But the cougars countered with a 4-0 rush to cut the Lady Monarch advantage to 49-48 with 7:31 remaining.

From there King's regrouped and used three straights baskets from Fabian, rader, and Atchison and three free throws from Michaels to cap a decisive 9-0 run to push the score to 58-48 with 3:25 to play. After a Cougar bucket, Rader drained a huge three-pointer from the left win to give the Lady Monarchs a 61-50 with 3:00 on the clock.

Misericordia chose to foul the remainder of the game as the Lady Monarchs made 7-of-18 the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Michaels bested her previous career-best 24 points set last week against Eastern. The Lady Monarch standout was repeatedly fouled going to the basket and made 14-of-26 attempts from the charity stripe. Her 14 free throws tied King's school record while 26 attempts set a new Lady Monarch mark. She also added six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Rader, meanwhile, added 17 points and six rebounds, closing within 18 points of reaching the 1,000-point plateau. Atchison contributed 11 points and five rebounds while Dahl tallied eight points and five boards. Fabian chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.

The Cougars were led by Smicherko with 21 points while Hannah Seeley added 12.

The Lady Monarchs next travel to face DeSales University Saturday at 1 p.m. in Center Valley.
