KING'S WOMEN RALLY PAST DESALES 64-61 ON ATCHISON LATE FREE THROWS
WILKES-BARRE —
Lindsay Atchison made two foul shots with 0:05 remaining to break up a tie game as the King's College women's basketball team rallied for a 64-61 victory over DeSales University Wednesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in Freedom Conference play while DeSales slipped to 8-5 and 1-2.
King's led 61-60 with 0:21 to play when DeSales knotted the score when Alexis Grant made one-of-two foul shots, After a King's time out, the Lady Monarchs ran the clock down looking for the final shot when Atchison launched a three-pointer from the top of the key. The foul missed but DeSales was whistled for a foul, giving Atchison three shots. The Lady Monarchs senior missed the first attempt but made the final to to put King's ahead 63-61 with 0:05 to play.
DeSales attempted a full-court pass but King's Ashey Davis stole the ball and was fouled with 01.8 on the clock. Davis made one-of-two shots for a 64-61 lead. DeSales would turn the ball over on the ensuing inbound pass as King's held on for the victory.
The first half was closely played for much of the first half as the Lady Monarchs trailed 17-17 lead with 7:09 left on the clock. But Atchison scored on a driving lay-up and
Celia Rader canned a three-pointer to give the Lady Monarchs a 21-17 lead. After a DeSales miss,
Molly Dahl converted a traditional three-point play and
Jessica McHugh made good on a short jumper to push the score to 26-17 with 3:44 remaining in the half. But from there DeSales exploded, closing out the half with a 16-0 run to take a 33-26 lead at the break.
In the second half King's came out of the locker room and quickly closed the gap, tying the game at 36-36 on a Dahl lay-up with 15:49 left in the contest. From there it was nip-and-tuck the rest of the way as neither team led by more tan three-points. With King's trailing 58-56,
Cassie Erdmann converted two clutch free throws to tie the score at 58-58, marking the 12th time the score was tied during the contest. After a DeSales turnover, Dahl drained a huge three-pointer to put the Lady Monarchs ahead 61-58 with 1:19 on the clock. Grant then made a jumper at the 1:01 mark, then followed with one-of-two free throws to set up Atchison's heroics.
Dahl topped King's with 15 points and five rebounds while
Katlin Michaels followed with 12 points, eight assists, and eight steals. Atchison also totaled 12 points while Rader and Davies chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
DeSales was paced by Grant with a game-high 32 points while Sondrine Golvas followed with 17. No other DeSales player scored more than four points
King's returns to the court Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Matchup at Eastern University in St. Davids.
