KING'S FIELD HOCKEY UPSETS 16TH RANKED DREW 2-1 IN OVERTIME
WILKES-BARRE -- Alexandra Bolinski (Nanticoke/Nanticoke Area) scored the game-winning goal just 3:01 into overtime as the King's College field hockey team upset previously unbeaten and 16th ranked Drew University 2-1 in a non-conference battle Wednesday at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
With the win King's improved to 6-5 on the year while Drew slipped to 10-1.
King's withstood a torrid start by Drew and fended off nine first-half penalty corners. The Lady Monarchs broke through when Abby McManus scored unassisted with 18:36 left in the opening half as King's took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Rangers tied the score at 1-1 with 21:29 left in regulation when Sam Barcia scored off a pass from Amanda Hearney. The score would remain the same as the teams entered the seven-on-seven overtime.
King's quickly ended the game when Kim Howantiz found Bolinski open up the middle for a breakaway. When Drew keeper C.C. Carlini left the net to challenge Bolinski, the Lady Monarch senior pushed the ball through Carlini's pads from 10 yards out and the ball rolled all the way into the net as King's walked away with the victory.
Drew outshot King's 23-10 for the game and finished with a 22-5 advantage in penalty corners.
King's goalie Megan Withrow made 14 saves for the Lady Monarchs while Carlini posted five stops.
The Lady Monarchs return to the field Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. Freedom Conference matchup with Manhattanville College.
