Box Score Gabrielle Murphy Nets Game-Winning Overtime Goal
Wilkes-Barre, Pa. --
Gabrielle Murphy netted the game-winning goal 1:48 into overtime to lift the King's College women's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 win over DeSales University Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Ivy Nulton set up the game-winning goal, streaking down the right wing and playing a cross that bounced off two DeSales defenders and the keeper before Murphy finished into a wide open goal.
The Lady Monarchs jumped out first getting a goal in the 31st minute when
Amy Barge headed a
Brydie Gillespie corner kick inside the left post.
DeSales answered back early in the second half on an unassisted tally by Brady Walsh that deflected off King's keeper
Jessica Natale and tied the game 1-1. The score would remain the same through the rest of regulation until Murphy's game-winner.
Natale made four saves to pick up the win in net. Emily Hoats took the loss in the goal for the Bulldogs making two stops.
With the win the Lady Monarchs improved to 9-7-1 overall and 4-3 in conference play, earning them the third seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs. This will mark the first time the Lady Monarchs have made the postseason in the program's history since the squad became a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1993. The nine wins also marks the most victories for the Lady Monarchs in a single-season since the 1997 squad went 12-8 but did not qualify for post-season play.
Last season King's went 4-12-1 and enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in 2013 with a team comprised almost entirely of freshmen and sophomores under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Frank Carrozza.
The Lady Monarchs will travel to Wilkes Tuesday for the Freedom Conference semifinals at a time to be determined.
