King's Basketball Falls to Susquehanna, Wilkes Edges Berkeley in Monarch Classic Openers

SUSQUEHANNA DOWNS KING'S WHILE WILKES EDGES BERKLEY IN MONARCH CLASSIC OPENERS

WILKES-BARRE — Steven Weidlich scored a game-high 21 points and the Susquehanna University men's basketball team capitalized on a decided advantage at the foul line as the visiting Crusaders posted a 73-67 victory over host King's College in the first game of the annual Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon Gm.

With the win, Susquehanna improved to 4-3 while KIng's fell to 4-4. The Monarchs have now dropped their fourth straight since opening the season with a 4-0.  King's has also gone 0-4 in attempting to present head coach J.P. Andrejko with his 200th career victory.

Thew Crusaders took a 34-30 half-time lead as Susquehanna made 18-of-22 free throwns, scoring more than half of its points from the charity stripe.

In the second half King's managed to tie the game at 34-34 after Joe Caffrey made a pair of foul shots with 19:35 left in the contest. But Susquehanna countered with a 21-8 run to build a 55-42 advantage  on a three-pointer by  Brandon Hedley. The Monarchs battled back with a 20-10 spurt and trimmed the lead to 65-62 with 2:04 to play after four straight points from Tom Heston and a mid-range jumper by Dan Rutecki.

Susquehanna, however, responded with a three-pointer by Weidlich with 1:10 on the clock to push the score to 69-64 and made five of six foul shots the rest of the way to hold on for the victory.

Weidlich was 5-of-15 from the field but made 8-of-10 from the foul line. Brandon Hedley tallied 19 points with five three-pointers while Harley Sellinger added 18 points, including 8-of-10 from the foul line. Overall, Susquehanna made 33-of-40 foul shots in the game compared to 14-of-22 for King's.

The Monarchs were paced by Joe Caffrey with 16 points, four  rebounds, and three assists while Kyle Hammonds followed with 12 points, three assists, and three steals. Heston added 10 points and four rebounds while Pat O'Donnell chipped in with eight points.

King's will play Berkley College Sunday at 3:00 p.m.


WILKES 67 – BERKELEY 63

WILKES-BARRE — Wilkes placed four players in double-figures scoring and the Colonels held off a late rally to defeat Berkeley College 67-63 in the opening day of the Monarch Classic at King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Neither team led by more than seven points throughout the game. Wilkes held a 61-55 led with 2:54 left after a three-pointer by Cameron Hinkle. Berkley cut the lead to two points on three occasions, the last coming at 65-63 following an Ahmed Dickerson lay=up with 0:41 to play. Wilkes would turn the ball over on its next possession but the Knights were unable to capitalize when Keenan Langston missed a jumper and Wilkes' Jimmy Bracket rebounded and was fouled with 0:13 on the clock. Bracketts missed the front end of the one-and-one and teammate Hinkle snared the offensive rebound.

Wilkes' Nic Wilkens was then fouled with 0:04 left and made the first foul shot to push the score to 66-63 but missed the second shot. The rebound would bounce directly back to Wilkens, who corralled the miss, and was immediately fouled again with 0:03.  The Wilkes senior would make the first shot but missed the second to bring the final score to 67-63.

Pat Furst led Wilkes with 13 points and four rebounds while Wilkens added 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Hinkel also added 10 points with three rebounds while Tyler Jackson also contributed with 10 points.

For Berkeley, Langston scored a game-high 21 points with four rebounds and three steals while Richard Rampersad added 16 points and three steals. Elijah Craig led the Knights with 10 rebounds while adding seven points and three assists.

Wilkes will play Susquehanna University Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in King's Scandlon Gym.
