KING'S WOMAN ROUTE MANHATTANVILLE, MOVE ONE STEP CLOSER TO CLINCHING FIRST ROUND PLAYOFF HOME GAME
PURCHASE, NY -- The King's College women's basketball team used a big first half while five players scored in double-figures as the Lady Monarchs posted an impportant 79-58 road victory over Freedom Confernece rival Manhattanville College Saturday in Purchase.
With the win the Lady Monarchs improved to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in Freedom Conference play. Manhattanville, meanwhile, fell to 11-12 and 3-9 in league competition. The Lady Monarchs can clinch at least the second seed and a first-round playoff home game if first-place FDU-Florham defeats third-place DeSales in a game rescheduled for Sunday in Madison, NJ.
King's came flying out of the gates and quickly built a 15-4 lead just 5:06 into the game thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Celia Rader, a five points from Lindsay Atchison, and four by Jennifer Fabian.
The Lady Monarchs continued to pour it on and stretched the score to 40-19 with 3:37 on the clock after a three-pointer by Molly Dahl and a driving lay-up from Tiffany O'Donnell. The Valiants closed out the half with a 9-4 run to close to within 44-28 at the break.
The second half started just like the first as Rader and Katlin Michaels buried back-to-back three-pointers to put the Lady Monarchs on top 50-28. King's kept the pressure on and later built a 65-40 lead with 11:52 on the clock after a jumper from Jessica McHugh and an inside bucket by Dahl.
The Lady Monarchs maintained control and built its biggest lead of the game at 27 points when a three-pointer by Dahl and a lay-up from Michaels upped the score to 78-51 with 3:19 remaining in the contest.
Michaels finished the game with 15 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds and moved to within 21 points of reaching the 1,000-point plateau. Rader also had 15 points, including five three-pointers while Atchison tallied 15 points, four assists, and three blocks. Fabian posted 12 points and 11 rebounds for her third straight double-double while Dahl contributed a double-double of her own with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tara Zdancewicz chipped in with six points for the Lady Monrachs.
King's shot 53.6 (30-56) percent from the floor and 47.4 (9-19) percent from three-point range.
Manhattanville was paced by Alyson Caiazzo with 17 points and 16 rebounds while Taylor Wilson and Bri Pabon contributed 16 and 14 points respectively. Only three other Valiant players scored in the game.
King's returns to action Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. home matchup against Misericordia University in Scandlon Gymnasium. The Lady Monarchs will then close out thergular-season on Saturday by hosting Wilkes at 1:00 p.m.
