WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team made its home debut a successful one as the Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of the University of Scranton Sunday in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

The Monarchs won the first game 5-1 before taking the nightcap 3-2. With the victories, King's improved to 6-1 on the year while Scranton slipped to 2-4.

Rob Lemoncelli
In the opener the Monarchs took a 1-0 first inning lead when Rob Lemoncelli led off with a walk and later scored from third on a passed ball. The Monarchs added four more runs in the second when Rich Acierno walked, Tim Marchetti singled, and Anthony Re delivered a two-run single. Lemoncelli and Brian Mikus then followed with run-scoring singles as the Monarchs built a 5-0 lead.

Scranton added its lone run in the third when Matt Maghini singled and later scored from third on an infield ground out off the bat of Mike Gaeta.

Lemoncelli was 1-for-2 with one run and a RBI while Re finished 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI. Brenton Eades (2-0) was the winning pitcher for King's, allowing six hits and striking out six batter in seven complete innings. Corey Gorman (1-1) took the loss for Scranton, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while striking out seven.

In the second game, King's took a 1-0 first inning lead when Brian Mikus singled and scored from second on a base hit by Eric Bohem. Scranton tied the score at 1-1 in the top half of the fourth inning when Tim LeCompte doubled and touched home following a RBI single by Ray Grapsy.

Brian Mikus
King's answered in the bottom half of the inning when Mikus walked and Chris Sweeney followed with a two-run home run over the left centerfield fence to put the Monarchs on top 3-1.

Scranton countered in the sixth when LeCompte again doubled and was driven home on a Grapsy single to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Royals threatened in the seventh with Ross Danzig singled with two out and moved to second when a pickoff throw to first-base by Monarch starting pitcher Ryan Gimbi sailed high, allowing Danzig to advance to second. But Gimbi shut the door, striking out LeCompte to end the game.

Mikus led King's by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Sweeney was 1-for-2 with a two-run home run while Bohem finished 1-for-3 with a RBI. Gimbi (2-0) earned the complete game victory for King's, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out eight batters in seven innings.
