KING'S BASEBALL SWEEPS MT. ST. VINCENT
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader Monday against the visiting College of Mt. St. Vincent. The Monarchs won the first game 11-5 before taking the nightcap 14-4.
With the sweep, King's improved to 11-5 on the year.
In the opener, King's exploded for six runs in its first at-bats, then added five more in the sixth to put the game away. Chris Sweeney paved the way by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, two runs, and two RBI. Anthony Lizzi was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, an two RBI. Anthony Re finished 3-for-3 with a run while Eric Bohem was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Cody Krupa went 1-for-3, including a three-ru home run in the first inning. Monarch starting pitcher Ryan Weiner picked up the win, allowing one hit with three strikeouts in four scoreless innings.
In the second game, King's fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning but answered with seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
Sweeney continued to wield a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a three-run home run in the second inning. Jared Turner was 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, including a two-run home run, also in the second inning.
Rob Lemoncelli and Brian Mikus were both 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI apiece. King's starter Shawn Heck was the game-two winner, allowing four hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
Sweeney, meanwhile, had five hits on the day and is now 12 away from reaching the 200-hit mark for his career.
King's returns to the field Tuesday when the Monarchs host Penn State Schuylkill at 4:00 p.m. at Lipo Field.
