Seven Run Ninth Does in King's Baseball in 13-11 Loss to Manhattanville

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. -- The King's College baseball team fell 13-11 to visiting Manhattanville in the final game of a three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Lipo Field.

The Monarchs held a 9-6 advantage going to the top of the ninth inning. The Valiants sent 11 batters to plate scoring seven runs on five hits while drawing a pair of walks to take a 13-9 lead. The Monarchs rallied after Tim Zaccone led off the frame with a hit by pitch and  two-run homer from Rob Lemoncelli to cut the lead to 13-11, but Joe Palmeri got the next three Monarchs in order to pick up the win.

King's trailed 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth when the Monarch bats hung a five spot on the board with Jared Turner and Lemoncelli each belting two-run doubles giving the Monarchs their first lead of the day, 7-5. King's tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-5.

The Valiants got on the board first in the top of the second after Kevin Brady tripled with two outs and scored when a ball off the bat of John Bucci was misplayed by Zaccone. Manhattanville tacked on three more runs in the third keyed by a two run single by Bobby Guerra to extend the lead to 4-0.

Chris Sweeney led the way for the Monarchs with a pair of hits including a two-run home run in the third. Sweeney finished the day with two RBI and two runs scored. Lemoncelli and Anthony Lizzi also picked up a pair of hits. Lemoncelli drove home four runs on the day.

Guerra paced the Valiant offense going 4-for-6 with five RBI and one run scored. Brady added pair of hits with two runs scored and one RBI.

Jon Keller took the loss for the Monarchs after allowing three runs in the ninth. Palmeri picked up the win for the Valiants in relief.

The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Marywood for a non-conference contest slated for 4:00 p.m.
