KING'S BASEBALL FORGES SPLIT WITH DESALES IN SEASON FINALE
WILKES-BARRE -- Without the possibility of qualifying for the Freedom Conference Baseball Tournament, King's College enters its season finale against league co-leader DeSales with its eye on playing the role of spoiler.
The Monarchs did just that, capturing the first game of the twin bill 5-4 before dropping the nightcap 14-4. With the split, King's ended its season 16-15 overall and 7-14 in Freedom Conference play. DeSales, meanwhile, slipped to the second-seed in next week's conference tournament after moving to 29-9 and 17-4, a game behind now top-seeded Misericordia. DeSales would have had the tiebreaker had the etams finished tied based on a 2-1 season series edge between the teams.
In the opener, the teams were locked in a 2-2 tie heading into the eighth inning where the Bulldogs scored two runs thanks to an errant pickoff throw by the Monarchs.
In the bottom of the eighth, King's Rob Lemoncelli led off by getting hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Chris Sweeney. Eric Bohem then delivered a run-scoring single before Anthony Lizzi came through with a clutch RBI single of his own to tie the game at 4-4. With one out, Rich Aciernno was intentionally walked to load the bases. Tim Marchetti then managed a ground ball to second base where King's pinch runner Kris Carr beat the throw home for the deciding run.
Lizzi led the way by going 3-for-4 with two RBI while Bohem was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sweeney was 1-for-4 and scored twice while Acierno also added a base hit.
Brenton Eades was the winning pitcher for King's, lasting all eight innings while scattering eight hits an striking out seven batters. Eades improved to 8-2 on the year and set a pair of sschool records in the process. The senior hurling set a new mark for single-season pitching victories while also becoming the program's career wins leader with 17 over his four year career.
In the nightcap, DeSales held a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth inning where the Bulldogs exploded for eight runs to put he game away.
Sweeney went 2-for-4 for King's, finishing the season with a school-record .496 (60-121) batting average. Cody Krupa was 2-for-2 while Rob Lemoncelli was 2-for-3. Brian Mikus, Lizzi, and Ed McNichol all added one hit apiece for the Monarchs.
