KING'S MEN'S TENNIS DOWNS FDU TO ADVANCE TO FREEDOM CONFERENCE TITLE MATCH
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College tennis team advanced to the Freedom Conference championship match for the second straight season as the Monarchs posted a 5-0 semi-final victory over visiting FDU-Florham Tuesday at Kirby Park.
With the win, second-seeded King's improved to 11-8 on the year while third-seeded FDU-Florham ended its campaign at 6-11.
The teams opened the match with the doubles competition as the Monarchs swept all three contests to take a 3-0 lead. At number-one doubles,
Tony Bevevino and
Jake Rohring registered a 8-2 win before
Bobby Buttafogo and
Chris DiMino followed with a 8-1 triumph in the second flight for a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs won its third doubles match when
Andrew Panzitta and Ryan Hegary battled to an 8-6 triumph.
In singles, Bevevino tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kevin Kotsack. The match then ended when Rohring led A.J. Warden 6-4, 1-0 before Warden was forced to retire. With the match clinched, the remaining four contests were halted and went unfinished.
King's will now travel cross-town to face top-seeded, defending Freedom Conference champion for the league title Wilkes University on Saturday at a time to be announced. It will mark the second straight year the teams have met for the Freedom Conference crown.
