KING'S BASEBALL SPLITS WITH EASTERN, SWEENEY ONE HIT SHY OF 200 FOR HIS CAREER
ST. DAVIDS -- Chris Sweeney, a Crestwood High School product, moved to within one base hit of reaching the 200 career-hit plateau as the King's College baseball team split a doubleheader with host Eastern University Saturday in St. Davids.
King's won the first game 5-0 but dropped the nightcap 8-4. With the split, King's stands at 13-7 overall and 4-6 in Freedom Conference play while Eastern is 9-11 and 4-8 in league competition.Sweeney entred the twin bill with 196 hits. In the opener, he went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a two-run. In the second game he was 1-for-2 and was walked twice. For the day he went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two extra base hits. Sweeney is not batting a staggering .590 (46-78) with seven home runs, 14 doubles, four triples, 32 RBI and owns a 1.141 slugging percentage
Sweeney will have an opportunity to become just the second player in King's history to reach 200 hits when the Monarchs travel to face cross-town rival Wilkes Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Artillery Park.
In the opener, Eric Bohem was 2-for-4 while Rob Lemoncelli finished 2-for-4 with a run. Jared Turner and Tim Marchetti also added one hit each. Brenton Eades
pitched outstanding in the first game for the Monarchs, tossing a complete-game five-hitter while striking out six batters.
In the second game the contest was tied 3-3 until Eastern scored five runs in the bottom-of-the sixth inning to put the game away. Bohem was 1-for-4 with a solo home run while Lemoncelli went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Rich Acierno, Anthony Re, and Tim Zaccone also added singles for King's. Pat Metthews took the pitching loss for King's, allowing six earned runs in five innings of work.
