King's Men's Soccer Posts Important Freedom Conference Win Over FDU

KING'S MEN'S SOCCER OUTLASTS FDU 5-3

WILKES-BARRE -- Daniel Hernandez scored one goal  and dished out two assists as the King's College men's soccer team posted a 5-3 victory over visiting FDU-Florham in an important Freedom Conference matchup at McCarthy Stadium.  The game was a rematch of the 2013 Freedom Conference title game won by King's 2-1.

With the win the Monarchs improved to 10-4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.  FDU, meanwhile, slipped to 3-8-3 and 1-2 in league competition.

King's opened the scoring at the 33:38 mark when Erik Foster knocked in a rebound off a Niall Croke shot. The Monarchs would take a 2-0 lead at the half when Chris Nygren drilled a shot into the upper right corner off a pass by Hernandez with 18:53 in the opening stanza.

The Monarchs took a 3-0 lead with 32:44 remaining in the second half when Hernandez score off an assist by David Stroh.  But FDU answered just 2:43 later when Chaz Armand struck net following a pass by Tommy Asselta.

The Devils trimmed the lead to 3-2 with 21:22 to play when Jay Bower knocked in a loose ball in front of the Monarch net.  But King's responded with 14:19 to go when Brian Fenster scored off a short pass in the box by Hernandez to stretch the lead to 4-2.  

King's added its final goal with 6:25 on the clock when Croke headed in an indirect kick off the foot of Nygren to extend the Monarch advantage to 5-2.  FDU, however, scored the game's final goal when Andrew Ruane converted a penalty kick with 1:57 remaining.

King's outshot FDU 16-13 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Monarch goalie Tyler Wilson made six saves in the game.

King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs host Wilkes in a 7:00 p.m. matchup at McCarthy Stadium.
