KING'S WRESTLERS OPEN SEASON WITH 10TH PLACE FINISH AT MONARCH INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

WILKES-BARRE — King's College freshman Jake Daniel placed third at 125-pounds to lead the King's College wrestling team to a 10th place finish at the 2014 Monarch Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

Roger Williams University of Rhode Island was the team champion with 140 points, followed by York College of Pennsylvania with 120. Cortland State was third with 165.5 points while Wilkes was fourth with 108. Lycoming finished 103 while Rochester Institute of technology was sixth.  Kings managed 37 points.

Daniel won his first collegiate match 6-4 over eighth-seeded Marvin Brown of Cortland. Daniel then advanced to the semi-finals with a medical forfeit. In the semi-finals he fell 3-2 to fifth-seeded Nicholas Barbaria to fall into the consolation bracket. Once there, he pinned Noah Malamut of Gettysburg in 4:00, then pinned Kyle Drick of Lycoming in 2:21 in the consolation finals.

Daniel was the only Monarch wrestlers to reach the semi-finals and the only place-winner.
