Late Rally Comes Up Short in King's Women's Basketball Loss to Eastern

St. Davids, Pa. -- Three different Lady Monarchs reached double-figure scoring, but their late rally came up just short in a hard-fought 69-66 loss at Eastern on Thursday night in Freedom Conference action.

King's trailed 61-57 with 4:30 to play in the game after Eastern's Kaitlyn Dougherty netted a jumper. The Lady Monarchs answered back with a 3-pointer from Jennifer Fabian to cut the lead to 61-60 at the 4:04 mark. Meghan Nowak tallied a pair of layups to push the lead to 65-60 with just 3:05 to play.

After an Eagle timeout Dougherty tallied a layup to push the lead to 67-60 with 2:09 on the clock. King's battled back with four points from Jessica McHugh to cut the lead to 67-64. The Lady Monarchs got a stop and called a timeout with 12 seconds to play. Kayla Feairheller missed a jumper and Dougherty hit two shots from the line to ice the game.

King's came out of the gates hot opening the game with a 9-2 run capped by a Feairheller triple at the 13:56 mark of the first half. Eastern answered back with a 14-4 spurt of their own to take its first lead of the game, 16-13, at the 9:38 mark.

The Lady Monarchs evened the score on a 3-pointer from Sara Krupinski. The teams traded treys on the next two possessions to make the score 19-19 with 7:21 to play in the first half. King's went on a 7-2 run led by five points from Kasey Seitz to go up 26-21 at 4:17. The Eagles used an 11-1 spurt to close the half and take a 33-27 edge into the break.

McHugh opened the second half with a 3-pointer and Fabian tallied a layup to get the Lady Monarchs to within 33-32 with 18:47 to play. Eastern came back with a 6-0 spurt to extend the lead back to 39-32 with 16:45 remaining. The Lady Monarchs were able to battle back to within two, 43-41, on another McHugh 3-pointer. Nowak stopped the King's run with a layup at 13:11 to put the Eagles up 45-41.

King's used a 10-3 run to retake the lead 51-48 capped by a Tara Zdancewicz layup at the 8:39 mark. The teams traded baskets with neither team leading by more than two until Dougherty finished an old-school 3-point play at 5:43 to put Eastern up 59-56. Fabian split a pair of free-throws to cut the lead to 59-57 at 4:48.

McHugh tallied 16 points, shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, while also grabbing five rebounds. Feairheller also tallied 16 points to go with six boards and three helpers. Seitz was the third Lady Monarch in double-figures with 10 points, five assists and five rebounds.

Dougherty led all scorers with 25 points and three assists. Nowak netted 20 points, five boards and three steals. Emily Lavin pulled down 10 rebounds, scored six points and blocked three shots.

The Lady Monarchs slip to 5-15 overall and 1-8 in Freedom Conference play while Eastern moved to 12-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.

King's is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Madison, N.J. to take on FDU-Florham in Freedom Conference action.
