KING'S BASEBALL PICKS UP KEY SWEEP OF EASTERN SATURDAY

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team picked up a pair of important victories on Saturday when the Monarchs posted a doubleheader sweep of visiting Eastern University at Lipo Field in the Betzler Complex.

King's, which won by scores of 4-2 and 6-2, improved to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in Freedom Conference games. The Monarchs, who entered the twin bill slated to play five conference games in three days, took a positive step in its attempt to work its way into the playoff race.  Eastern, meanwhile, fell to 4-20 and 4-10.

In the opener King's rallied form a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tim Zaccone walked, Joe Zito reached base on a fielder's choice and Greg Bartle delivered a RBI single bringing home Zaccone, but an Eagle throwing error also allowed Zito to score on the play.  Anthony Lizzi stroked a double to bring he score to 4-2.

Three King's pitchers combined to hold Eagle batters to one hit. Shawn Heck pitched four innings and yielded he lone hit while Mike Krieger three two innings of hitless ball. Greg Bartle pitched the final inning to gain his first save of the season. 

Lizzi was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Bartle was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Zaccone was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

In the nightcap, the Monarchs rode the arm of Ryan Gimbi who pitched a complete-game three-hitter while striking out six batters.

King's broke up a 2-2 tie with two runs in the third and one run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Ryan Civello was 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI while Zito was also 2-for-3 with one run scored.  Lizzi was 1-for-3 with a RBI and scored twice.  Dan Tully was 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI.  Greg Bartle, Pat Riley, and Chris Carr all chipped in with base hits.

The Monarchs travel to Doylestown Sunday to play a make-up doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Delaware Valley College.
