King's Baseball Comes Up Short Against Eastern 7-3, Wins Three-Game Series 2-1

KING'S BASEBALL FALLS TO EASTERN, 7-3, WINS SERIES 2-1

ST. DAVIDS -- The host Eastern University baseball team broke open a close game with three runs in the eighth inning as the Eagles posted a 7-3 Freedom Conference victory over visiting King's College Monday in St. Davids.

With the loss, King's slipped to 7-12 and 5-9 in the Freedom Conference while Eastern improved to 5-20 and 5-10.

The Monarchs fell behind 3-0 after the Eagles scored once in the second and two more in the fifth. 

The Monarchs rallied to tie the score with three runs in the sixth when Anthony Lizzi started the rally with a two-run home run. After Dan Tully reached base on an error and moved to third on a Ryan Civello single. Tom Gibbons then drove in the tying run with an infield grounder.

Eastern took the lead in the seventh when Dab Schwartz was hit by a pitch, then promptly stole second base. After a sacrifice bunt moved Schwartz to third-base, Tom Orr lofted a sacrifice fly to center to push the score 4-3.

The Eagles put the game away in the bottom of the eighth with three runs.

Civello led King's at the plate by going 3-for-4 and was the only multiple hit batter for the Monarchs. Lizzi, Joe Zito, Greg Bartle, Stephen Brynock, Tom Gibbons, and Kris Carr all had one hit for the Monarchs.

Zach Palansky took the loss in relief for King's, allowing three earned runs in two and one-third innings of work.  Andrew Fisher started for the Monarchs and lasted five full innings, yielding three runs and striking out three batters.

The Monarchs will next host Misericordia Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
