King's Baseball Posts 9-6 Victory over Baptist Bible

KING'S BASEBALL POSTS 9-6 WIN OVER BAPTIST BIBLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team scored at least one run in seven different innings as the Monarchs posted a 9-6 victory over visiting Baptist Bible College Wednesday at Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

With the win King's improved to 8-16 on the year while Baptist Bible slipped to 4-18.

After yielding a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning, King's answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Anthony Lizzi drew a leadoff walk and Tom Gibbons was hit by a pitch. Ryan Civello then posted a RBI single and Stephen Brynock drove in a run on an infield ground-out. Ryan Hydock gave the Monarchs a 3-2 lead when he lofted a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Monarchs added a run in the third when Tim Zaccone reached base on an error and later scored from third on a Joe Zito sacrifice fly. After the Defenders scored twice in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4, King's plated another run in bottom of the inning to grab a 5-4 lead. Hydock singled, stole second base, and scored on a single from Zaccone.

The Monarchs tacked on another run in the fifth when Lizzi walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gibbons then came through with a run-scoring single to push the score to 6-4. 

King's added an unearned run in the sixth when Justin Martinelli reached base on an error and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Greg Bartle to give the Monarchs a 7-5 lead.

After Baptist Bible scored in the seventh to trim the lead to 7-6, King's again answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning. Gibbons singled and eventually scored  from second on a Hydock base hit to push the Monarch lead to 8-6.

King's tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Zaccone singled and score on a big two-out double by Lizzi for the final run of the game.

Hydock was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI while Gibbons finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI. Civello finished 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI while Zaccone was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Lizzi was 1-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while Anthony Re was 1-for-2 with a RBI in his first game since being injured in the Monarchs' Spring Break Trip to Myrtle Beach in early March.

Chris Marconi picked up the win in relief for King's, pitching one and one-third innings and allowing one run on three hits. Marconi came in for King's starter Zach Palansky who pitched four innings and allowed four runs, one which was earned, while striking out two batters. Ryan Gimbi picked up the save for King's, tossing two shutout innings to end the game while striking out five batters.

For Baptist Bible, Seth Boger was the top hitter, going 3-for-5 with a run and was the only multiple-hit player for the defenders.  Jake Claypoole took the complete-game loss, allowing nine runs, seven which were earned, and 10 hits over eight innings of work.

King's returns to the field Friday with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against FDU-Florham to begin a three-game weekend series. The teams will then play at doubleheader Saturday at FDU in Madison, NJ
