KING'S BASEBALL FALLS TO FDU-FLORHAM 8-2 IN SENIOR'S FINAL HOME GAME

WILKES-BARRE -- The visiting FDU-Florham baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings en route to an 8-2 triumph over King's College in the first of a three-game Freedom Conference weekend series between the teams.

With the win FDU improved to 18-12 overall and 13-6 in league play. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 8-17 and 5-14 in Freedom Conference contests.

The game also marked the final home contest for seven King's seniors. Those playing on Lipo Field for the final time included second-baseman Anthony Re, infielder Tim Zaccone, pitcher Mike Gagen, outfielder Corey Nixon, pitcherCody Jackson, pitcher Shawn Heck, and pitcher Jesse Brown.

After the Devils built a 5-0 lead, King's got on he board in the sixth inning. Zaccone reached base on a fielder's choice and Joe Zito singled through the left side to give the Monarchs runners at first and second with one out. Greg Bartle then delivered a run-scoring single to plate Zaccone before Anthony Lizzi ripped a double to bring in Zito to cut the score to 5-2 and set the table with runners at second and third.  The Monarchs, however, were unable to take advantage and an infield out and an infield pop-up ended the Monarchs hopes.

After the Monarchs got runners on base in both the seventh and eight innings and were unable to capitalize, FDU put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth thanks to a pair of Monarch errors.

King's went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to give the Devils a victory in game one of the final regular-season league series.

Bartle was 2-for-4 with a RBI and was the only multiple hit player for King's. Zito, Tom Gibbons, Stephen Brynock, and Anthony Re accounted for the remainder of the Monarchs hits. Andrew Fisher was the losing pitcher for King's, lasting five full innings and allowing five runs, only two which were earned, while striking out four batters.
King's and FDU will conclude their series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in Madison, NJ.
