King's Baseball Defeats Wilkes 7-1 in First of Tree-Game Weekend Series

KING'S BASEBALL WINS FIRST OF THREE-GAME SERIES VERSUS WILKES, 7-1

MOOSIC -- The King's College baseball team built a 3-0 lead, then out the game away with a four-run ninth inning in a 7-1 win over cross-town rival Wilkes University Saturday at PNC Park in Moosic.

King's, which had its last eight games postponed due to foul weather, improved to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 8-9 and 3-5 in league competition.

The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the seocnd inning when Ryan Civello tripled and scored on an infield grounder by Dan Tully.

King's added a run in the fifth when Tully singled and later scored  on a single by Steve Brynock.  The Monarchs took a 3-0 lead in the seventh when Anthony Lizzi doubled and scored when Civello doubled in the next at-bat.

After Wilkes cut the lead to 3-1 in the eighth, the Monarchs countered with a four runs in the top of the ninth. Civello and Tully delivered back-to-back singles after an infield out moved both runners up a base, Brynock delivered a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.  Tom Gibbons then stroked a RBI double  and Tim Zaccone followed with a run-scoring single sto push the lead to 6-1. Joe Zito then smacked a RBI double to plat the final run of the game.

King's had 12 hits in the game. Civello was 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI while Gibbons was also 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Tully was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI while Brynock finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.  Zaccone, Zito, Lizzi, and Brynick all added one hit apiece.

King's starting pitcher Shawn Heck scattered seven hits over nine complete innings, striking out three batters without issuing a walk.

The teams will complete there three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at King's Lipo Field in the Betzler Athletic Complex
