King's Baseball Splits Doubleheader and Wins Weekend Series with Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. -- The King's College baseball team split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with crosstown rival Wilkes Sunday afternoon at Lipo Field.

The Monarchs took the opener 6-1 before dropping the second half of the twin bill 12-1.

In the first game Wilkes picked up an unearned run when an errant throw on a double play attempt skipped past the first baseman allowing Matthew Reese to score.

King's took the lead in the third. Stephen Brynock led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a Ryan Civello sac bunt. Tom Gibbons drove a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. After a Gibbons steal, Tim Zaccone hit a sacrifice fly to even the score at one. The Colonels misplayed a Joe Zito groundball to put runners on the corners. Greg Bartle drew a walk to load the bases. Anthony Lizzi came up with the clutch hit for the Monarchs driving a ball in the right center field gap for a bases clearing triple giving King's a 4-1 lead.

The Monarchs added insurance in the sixth taking advantage of another Wilkes error to plate a pair of runs and set the final.

Ryan Gimbi gave King's six solid innings allowing one unearned run on just three hits while striking out seven and walking five.  Patrick Condo took the game one loss for Wilkes.

Brynock went 2-for-2 in the opener with a run scored and an RBI. Lizzi drove in three while Gibbons and Zaccone each picked up an RBI.

In the nightcap the Monarchs got on the board first with Lizzi plating Zaccone with a single to left in the bottom of the first, but the Colonels took the lead with two runs in the third with Dan Pisacnchyn and Tyler Marino each driving in a run.

Wilkes also picked up a run in the fourth, but blew the game open in the fifth when they tallied seven runs on six hits and taking advantage of a pair of King's errors. Marcus Leaf delivered the big hit in the inning doubling to left driving in two runs. The Colonels tallied two insurance runs in the sixth as well.
