KING'S BASEBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AS MONARCHS FALL TO DEL-VAL, 9-8

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College baseball team just fell short in its attempt to rally in the ninth inning as the Monarchs fell to Delaware Valley College 9-8 in a Freedom Conference matchup Wednesday night at Lipo Field.

The Monarchs trailed 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth and leadoff hitter Tim Zaccone singled. After a strikeout, Greg Bartle and Anthony Lizzi drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Ryan Civello brought in a run with an infield out to cut the score to 9-6. Dan Tully then came though with a two-run single to bring the Monarchs within 9-8. With two outs King's tried to get Tully into scoring position but the Monarch rookie was caught stealing for the final out of the game.

King's fell behind 4-2 after three innings but the Aggies tacked on three more in the sixth and another in the seventh.  The Monarchs countered with three in the bottom of the seventh after Rick Brandes and Tom Gibbons both walked and moved up a base on a balk. With runners at second and third, Tim Zaccone knocked in a run with an infield ground-out. Joe Zito then followed with a sacrifice fly before Lizzi stroked a RBI double to cut the lead to 8-5.

But the Aggies pushed across what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Pete O'Hara was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Brandon Bell. With no outs, O'Hara then scored when Ryan Wenger grounded into a double-play.

Tully led the Monarchs with a 4-for-4 showing with two RBI. Lizzi was 2-for-4 with a two-run double and scored twice. Steve Brynock was also 2-for-4 with a RBI. Zaccone finished 1-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

Andrew Fisher was the losing pitcher for King's, allowing four runs, three earned, in five innings of work. Fisher struck out five batters and did not walk a batter.

The Monarchs will host Baptist Bible College Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Lipo Field.
