KING'S FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO ALVERNIA IN SEASON OPENER

WILKES-BARRE -- Margaret Wentzel scored three goals and Summer Liberto scored one goal and handed out three assists to lead visiting Alvernia University to a 5-3 victory over the host King's College foeld hockey team Friday at Mcarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
 
Alvernia took a 1-0 lead when Wentzel scored off an assist by Liberto 5:34 into the game. The score grew to 2-0 when Amanda Galenti struck net off a second assist from Liberto with 21:43 left in the half.
 
In the second half Wentzel scored her second goal off a third assist from Liberto just 4:24 into the period to push the lead to 3-0.  Liberto then scored with 27:16 remaining to give the Crusaders a 4-0 lead King's got on the boar with 24:43 left in the contest when Alyssa Monaghan scored unassisted at 24:43.  After Alvernia pushed the score to 5-2, Monaghan scored her second goal with 21:23 on the clock to bring the score to 5-2.
 
King's scored the final goal of the game on an unassisted tally by Nicole Sott with 7:44 to play
to bring the final margin to 5-3.
 
King's held a 19-8 edge in shots as well while Alvernia owned a 12-5 lead in penalty corners.  King's goalies Paige Tedik and Chelseay Blaney combined for five saves in the game.

The Monarchs return to the field September 3 with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Cedar Crest College in AllenTown.
