KING'S WOMEN'S HOOPS FALL TO DESALES, 57-51WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College women's basketball team fell to visiting DeSales University 57-51 on Wednesday night in a Freedom Conference match up at Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win DeSales improves to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in Freedom play while King's drops to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Freedom play.
King's had a second half rally fall short for the second straight game after whittling down an 11-point deficit with 4:26 left in the game down to 3 at 54-51 with 0:48 seconds left.
Kayla Feairheller had 7 of her game high 21 points during the stretch. DeSales hit a free throw to increase their lead to 55-51 with 43 seconds left.
Shae Grim missed a three-point attempt with 29 seconds left and King's was forced to foul to stop the clock. Megan Baird hit two free throws to put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs.
The Lady Monarchs started the game strong behind three-pointers by Feairheller and
Kasey Seitz to take a 6-4 lead in the first four minutes. However DeSales countered with a 10-2 run to take a 14-8 lead with 11:37 left in the first half. The rest of the half was back and forth with the teams trading baskets until Jen Napolitano hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in the half to give DeSales a 29-21 halftime lead.
DeSales came out strong in the second half and increased their lead to a game-high 14 points after a Baird three-pointer with 15:20 left. The Lady Monarch were able to capitalize on forcing six turnovers on the next seven Bulldogs possession and scoring eight points to trim the lead down to six at 41-35 with 11:52 remaining. Five straight points by Napolitano for the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 11 with 8:43 remiaing.
The Lady Monarchs were led by
Kayla Feairheller with 21 points.
Marissa Manning had 11 points and five rebounds while
Jennifer Fabian posted eight points and eight rebounds.
Kasey Seitz had five points, five rebounds, and five assists while
Olivia Hoffman tallied seven rebounds. King's shot 34.0 (18-53) percent from the field and 33.3 (6-18) percent from three-point range.
The Bulldogs had four players in double-digit points led by Morgan McCollian with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jen Napolitano had 12 points and Megan Baird tallied 11 points. Mikelyn Mackavage posted 10 points and six rebounds. DeSales shot 36.5 (23-63) percent from the floor and 30.0 (6-20) percent from three-point range.
King's will continue conference play on Saturday when they travel to St. David's, PA to take on Freedom Conference rival Eastern University at 1:00 p.m.
