KING'S WOMEN EDGE WILKES, 68-59 ON FEAIRHELLER'S 24 POINTS

WILKES-BARRE --The King's College women's basketball team overcame a 56-55 advantage with 2:43 remaining, ending the game with a 12-3 run as the Lady Monarchs picked up an important 68-59 victory over crosstown rival Wilkes University Wednesday night in the Marts Center .

With the win King's improved to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the Freedom Conference while Wilkes slipped to 7-9 and 2-5 in league play.

King's worked its way to a 12-11 lead with 14:10 left in the first half on the strength of four points by Marissa Manning and three each from Kasey Seitz and Kayla Feairheller. The game stood tied at 15-15 following a three-pointer by Feairheller at the 13:32 mark. 

After two foul shots from Elena Stambone gave the Lady Colonels a 17-15 lead with 12:23 left in the half Seitz then canned a three-pointer for an 18-17 King's lead with 11:37 remaining. Manning then countered with a jumper to give King's a 20-19 lead with 10:32 left in the half.

After nearly four minutes of scoreless play King took a 22-19 lead at the 6:37 mark on a short jumper by Tara Zdancewicz.
Wilkes, however, responded with a 8-0 spurt to build a 27-22 advantage with 5:20 to go after four straight points from Stambone.
King's ended a 8:10 scoring drought when Feairheller hit a jumper with 2:22 left in the half. Manning then followed with one-of-two free throws to trim the lead to 27-25 at the 1;24 mark. After a Wilkes jumper from Chelsea Smelas, King's closed to within 29-28 lead into the halftime break on a Feairheller three-pointer with 1:03 to play.

In the second half King's came out with a 7-1 surge to take a 35-31 lead on a inside baskets from Olivia Hoffman and Jennifer Fabian, along with a three-pointer by Manning at 17:36.

King's later upped the lead to 42-35 after a Feairheller trey with 13:19 left. But Wilkes chipped away with a 10-6 spurt to close to within 48-45 on two free throws from Stambone with 6:25 to play.

After King's missed three straight foul shots, Stambone was fouled making a driving lay-up and converted the subsequent free throw to tie the game at 48-48 with 5:27 remaining.  After a King's miss Smelas was fouled and converted both charity tosses to give Wilkes a 50-48 lead with 5:04 on the clock.

Fearheller responded with two foul shots to tie the game at 50-50 with 4:23 to play. With King's down 54-52, Seitz buried a three-pointer from the left wing with 3:02 remaining to give King's a 55-54 advantage.

After Wilkes took a 56-55 lead, Seitz banked in a three-pointer wirth 1:57 left to purt King's back on top for good at 58-56. Feairheller added another three to bring the score to 61-56 at the 1:20 mark. After Seitz made two foul shots Basile got Wilkes back on the board with a driving lay-up to cut the lead to 63-59 with 0:34 left in the contest. But King's put the game away at the foul line as Feairheller and Hoffman combined to go 2-for-3 over the final 0:29 to seal the win.

Feairheller led King's with 24 points on five three-pointers while Seitz followed with 14 points and six assists. Manning tallied 13 points while Fabian chipped in with eight points and 12 boards. 

For Wilkes Stambone finished with 20 points while Smelas added 18. 

King's returns to the court Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup at DeSales.
