KING'S FIELD HOCKEY EDGED BY WILKES, 2-1WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to cross-town rival Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Colonels improve to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in MAC Freedom play while the Monarchs fall to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The loss also eliminates King's from Freedom Conference tournament contention.
The Monarchs had a chance to take a early lead with 26:17 left in the first half when they forced a Wilkes turnover, and
Caitlin Wood passed the ball up to
Kelsey Gabriele whose shot from the right wing nearly missed going inside the right post. The Colonels countered and scored the first goal of the game in the 12
th minute when Haley Gayoski found Jenna Skrinak who knocked the ball inside the right post.
King's nearly tied the game early in the second half when
Brianna DiMaggio's shot from the right wing just went wide right. The Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the 50
th minute when Marissa Surdy converted a penalty stroke. The Monarchs fought back and cut the deficit to 2-1 when
Nicole Sott found DiMaggio on the left wing and she put the ball just inside the right post. King's had an opportunity to tie the game when they were awarded a penalty corner with just seconds left. However the Monarchs were not able to get off a shot.
The Monarchs outshot the Colonels 12-6 for the game and held a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners. Dallas Kendra got the win in goal for the Colonels making seven saves.
Paige Tedik made three saves in goal for King's.
King's will try to end the season on a high note on Tuesday when they travel to Center Valley, PA to take on DeSales University at 3:30 p.m. in their final game of the year.
