King's Volleyball Earns Important 3-1 Win Over Wilkes

KING'S VOLLEYBALL POSTS IMPORTANT 3-1 CONFERENCE WIN OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's volleyball team took a big step towards its quest to reach the Freedom Conference playoffs as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 3-1 win over crosstown rival Wilkes University Tuesday night in Scandlon Gym.

King's, which won by scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23, improved to 14-6 overall and 2-2 in league play. Wilkes, meanwhile, slipped to 10-12 and 1-3 in conference competition.

After the teams split the first two games, Wilkes appeared posited to take a 2-1 lead after building a 23-18 lead.  But King's battled back to rattle off the next seven points to win the set 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead of its own.  The Lady Monarchs received strong serving from Brenna Smudde who scored all seven straight service points while posting two aces.

In the fourth set King's held a 24-20 lead but Wilkes battled back to cut the game to 24-23. But King's managed to get the final side-out to win the match.

Rachel Miller led King's with 18 kills and 15 digs while Jill Korgeski followed with 15 kills and six digs. Katelyn Shifflett contributed to the offensive attack with 14 kills and five digs while Maddie Kumm dished out 49 assists with six digs. Smudde tallied 13 digs while Elen O'Donnell recorded four kills and 11 dogs. Jessica Carr chipped in with four kills

Wilkes was paced by Ally Paskas with 14 kills and six digs while Ellen Mook followed with 13 kills anad three block assists. Megan Powers chipped in with 34 assists.

King's returns to the court Thursday with a 5:00 p.m. matchup at Rosemont College.
