SPARKS PLACES 6TH AT NCAA EAST REGIONALS

ROANOKE, VA -- Freshman Matt Sparks placed sixth for the King's College wrestling team at the 2015 NCAA East Regional Championships Sunday at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Va. 

The Monarchs, besieged by injuries all season long, were unable to place a single wrestler in the top-three and did not qualify a single wrestler to the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time since the 2000 season, marking the end of a 14-year run.

With a line-up comprised of seven freshmen among its 10 entrants, the Monarchs inexperience was evident among the field of 18 teams. King's placed 14th in the team standings.

Sparks won his opening match at 133-pounds with a 10-7 decision over Anthony Geiger of Stevens. Sparks then fell to second seeded Zach Haynes of Delaware Valley by a fall in 4:47.  He then stayed alive with a 7-3 decision over Evan Krumheuer of Johns Hopkins and then defeated Justin Zimmerman of Ferrum by a 3-0 count. Sparks then fell to top-seeded Ryan O'Boyle of McDaniel by a fall in 4:27 in the consolation semi-finals.  In the fifth-place match Spark was pinned in 4:05 by Kevin Hoogheem of Ursinus to finish sixth.

In the 125-pound weight class King's freshman Jake Daniel dropped his opening match to second-seeded Guesseppe Rea of Wilkes by a 16-3  major decision. Daniel was then eliminated in his next match with a 12-8 decision loss to Nathan Frantz of McDaniel.

In the 141-pound class King's Kevin Kelly fell to James Kelly of Scranton 16-2 in the opening round  and was then pinned in 2:48 to Trenton Dolby of the Merchant Marine Academy

At 149, King's Ben Siegel was pinned in his opening match by second-seeded Derek Arnold of Ursonus. He was then eliminated with a 6-4 decision loss to Tommy Grifa of Johns Hopkins.

In the 157-pound class, Howard Kilpatrick dropped his opening match with a 13-2 decision loss to Sean Lombardi of Wilkes. Kilpatrick then won his next match with a 7-4 decision over Daniel Reynolds of Ferrum but was then eliminated in the second round of consolations by an 8-2 count to Joe Bartoli of Centenary.

At 165-pounds King's junior Keith Wanamaker dropped his first match 10-2 to Welles Sakmar of Johns Hopkins and was then eliminated with a 14-2 major decision to Donald Wagner of Centenary.

In the 174-pound class, King's freshman Zachary Smith dropped a 15-0 technical fall decision to Ben Schweiger of Delaware Valley in his first match. Smith then posted a pin in 6:48 of Karl Schmitt of Mt. St. Vincent but was then eliminated his the second round of consolations in a 5-2 decision loss to Ray Jazikoff of New York University.

At 184-pounds, King's senior Nathaniel Seals was pinned in his first match in 4:05 by Phil Woods of Stevens and was then eliminated in the consolations by a pin in 4:41 to Wilkes' Levi Reppert.

In the 197-pound class, King's junior Ryan Longenberger dropped his opening match 4-1 to second-seeded Dennis Melendez of Hunter. Longeberger won his first consolation match with a 8-4 decision over Eric Stine of Ursinus but was then eliminated by Eric Back of Wilkes with a 2-1 decision.

At 285, King's freshman Ralph Bernardo fell in his first match to third-seeded Patryl Kopczynski of Hunter by a 2-0 count. Bernardo then earned a 3-1 overtime victory over Josh Caven of Centenary. Bernardo was then eliminated by fall in 2:48 to fourth-seeded Dave Oberrender of Wilkes.
