MONARCH BASEBALL DEFEATS EASTERN, 14-11

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to defeat Eastern University 14-11 on Monday afternoon at Lipo Field.

With the win King's improves to 5-15 overall and 1-9 in Freedom play while Eastern falls to 8-14 overall and 5-7 in league competition.

The Monarchs batted around in the seventh inning turning a 9-8 deficit into a 13-9 lead. Bruce Breithaupt led off the inning with a single into left-center then stole second. After a Ryan Civello walk Joe Civello moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Justin Martinelli singled up the middle to score Breithaupt and Kris Carr who pinch ran for Civello. Three batters later with runners on the corners the Eagles reliever balked to score Martinelli. After two walks Joe Zito had a two RBI single to center field to score Stephen Brynok and Greg Bartle.

Eastern got on the board first in the first inning with two runs. The Monarchs responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead. The Eagles tied the game in the top of the second with two runs and then took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth Sean Padden doubled and Zito and Breithaupt walked to load the bases. Ryan Civello flied out the left before Joe Civello connected on a pitch and hit his first home run of the year down the left field line. Civello's gram slam gave King's a 8-6 lead which they held until the seventh innings.

The Eagles were able to score three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead before the Monarchs had their big bottom half of the seventh. King's would get an insurance run in the eight and Eastern scored twice in the ninth to set the final.

Joe Civello had two hits and five RBIs for the Monarchs while Joe Zito had three hits and three RBIs. Bruce Breithaupt and Justin Martinelli also had two hits in the game. On the mound Justin Binkowski got the win in relief while Joe Zito got the save.

The Monarchs will next be in action on Saturday when they face DeSales University at PNC Field in Moosic, PA at 1:00 p.m.
