King's Baseball Rallies Past FDU to Win 1st of Three-Game Weekend Series

KING'S BASEBALL RALLIES PAST FDU, 3-2

MADISON, NJ -- Joe Zito singled in what proved to be the winning run in the eighth inning as the King's College baseball team overcame a 2-0 deficit in the seventh inning to pull off a 3-2 comeback win over host FDU-Florham Friday in Madison, NJ.

With the win, King's improved to 7-19 overall and 2-13 in Freedom Conference play while FDU slipped to 9-21 and 7-10 in league competition.

Trailing 2-0 enter the seventh inning Bruce Breithaupt led off with a single and moved to second when Zito was hit by a pitch. Stephen Brynock  then followed with a single to load the bases. Kyle Lupas delivered a run scoring single before Greg Bartle added another RBI single to knot the game at 2-2.

In the eighth, Breithaupt drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Sean Padden singled to advance Breithaupt to third, Zito delivered an opposite field single single to right to plate Breithaupt and give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead.

FDU attempted to rally in the bottom-of-the-ninth and placed runners at first and second with one out. But the Monarchs ended the game with a ground ball double play to secure the victory.

Bartle also starred on the mound for the Monarchs, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts in nine full innings.  Lupas finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI while Zito was 1-for-3 with one run and a RBI while Breithaupt was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Bartle, Joe Civello, Padden, and Brynock all added singles for the Monarchs who outhit the Devils 9-to-6 in the game.

King's and FDU will conclude their three-game weekend series Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in the Betzler Athletic Complex.
