KING'S FIELD HOCKEY OPEN SEASON WITH 4-0 VICTORY OVER MARYWOOD

SCRANTON, PA --- The King's College field hockey team opened the 2015 season with an impressive 4-0 victory over Marywood University in Scranton on Tuesday afternoon.

Division II transfer Caitlin Wood, playing in her first game for the Monarchs after beginning her collegiate career at West Chester University, scored the first goal of the game in the tenth minute when she tapped in a cross from Alyssa Monaghan. In the 31st minute Madysen Jones fought off a defender in the circle and put one past the goalkeeper from 10 yards out for her first collegiate goal to give King's a 2-0 heading into halftime.

Jones scored her second goal of the game in the 42nd minute when she put the ball into the back of the cage off an assist from Sarah Zbierski. Kelsey Doyle gave the Monarchs a 4-0 advantage in the 55th minute when Anastasia Araviakis sent a penalty corner towards the goal and Doyle tapped it in from the left side of the cage.

Madysen Jones led King's with two goals while Caitlin Wood and Kelsey Doyle had one goal each. Alyssa Monaghan, Anastasia Araviakis, and Sarah Zbierski all had an assist. The Monarchs outshot the Pacers 24-8 in the game and 13-6 in shots on goal. King's also held a 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.  Paige Tedik got the win in goal making four saves while Courtney Stefanik made one save in relief. Nicole Merrill made nine saves in goal for Marywood.

The Monarchs will next face a huge test when they play national powerhouse Salisbury University on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in Dallas, PA at the Misericordia Tournament. Salisbury enters the year ranked second in the national in the NFHCA preseason poll.
