KING'S VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO 12TH RANKED EASTERN IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE MATCHUPWILKES-BARRE — The 12th ranked Eastern University women's volleyball team proved to be too big and too talented as the visiting Eagles wore down host King's College en route to a 3-0 Freedom Conference triumph Tuesday night in Scandon Gym.
With the win, Eastern improved to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in league play while King's slipped to 10-2 and 0-2 in conference matches.
In the first game King's played outstanding and built an 11-10 lead over the Eagles. But Eastern remained composed and outscored the Monarchs 14-10 the rest of the way to win the opening set 25-20.
In the second set King's had difficulty passing off its serve return and had difficulty getting into its offense. The Eagles took advantage, jumping out to a 7-1 lead and cruised to a 25-13 win. The third set also found the Eagle asserting themselves early and Eastern closed out the match with a 25-15 victory.
Jill Korgeski led King's with 12 kils and one solo block while
Katelyn Shifflettadded five kills and two digs.
Julie Kollar and
Jessica Carr added four kills each while
Rachel Miller contributed three kills and seven digs.
Maddie Kumm distributed 20 assists while
Brenna Smudde and
Kristen Bohnenblusch chipped in with seven digs each.
Eastern, which featured five players between 6-foot and 6-foot-2, were led by Morgan Shemonski with 12 kills. Alicia Weigel followed with seven kills while Sarah Roberts added six kills. Rikki Schlager dished out 32 assists.
King's returns to action Friday and Saturday with the York College Invitational.
