KING'S BERNARDO PLACES 4TH AN NCAA EAST REGIONALS, JUST MISSES NATIONAL BERTH

FINAL BRACKETS

10720LEXINGTON, VA -- King's College heavyweight Ralph Bernardo just missed on his quest to earn a berth to the Division III National Wrestling Tournament when the sophomore placed fourth at the NCAA East Regional Championships concluding Sunday at Washington & Lee University.

On the first day of the tournament on Saturday, Bernardo went 1-1 and needed to wrestle back to third-place to earn a national tournament berth.

On Sunday, he won his first match of the day with a 3-2 decision over Zeb Pffeiffer of Ursinus. In the consolation semi-finals, he registered a 5-4 decision over Tate Delaney of Ferrum to advance to the consolation finals.

There, Bernardo would face third-seeded Tyler Mahler of Stevens who defeated Bernardo 15-3 on Saturday

In the rematch, both wrestlers were unable to score over the first three minutes of stand-up and entered the second period scoreless. Mahler chose the down position and took a 1-0 lead on an escape. Mahler then posted a take-down to build a 3-0 lead, but Bernardo would escape to cut the score to 3-1.

In the third period, Bernardo posted an escape to cut the lead to 3-2.   Bernardo made a number of furious attempts to secure a takedown but Mahler was successfully able to defend and held on for the victory and the national tournament berth that came along with it.

Bernardo finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and ended his sophomore year with a 25-11 mark. Bernardo was the lone King's wrestler to advance to the second day of the tournament. As a team, the Monarchs finished 14th among 18 squads.
