MONARCH BASEBALL INCH CLOSER TO POSTSEASON WITH SPLIT AT DELAWARE VALLEY
DOYLESTOWN, PA --- The King's College baseball team split a doubleheader with host Delaware Valley University on Sunday afternoon at Frank Wolfgand Field in Doylestown. The Monarchs won the opener 5-2 before falling in the nightcap 9-8 on a walk off single.
The Monarchs are now 20-12 overall and 9-9 in conference play while the Aggies are 15-16 overall and 4-12 in the conference. The Monarchs will enter the final weekend of conference play in fourth place with a two game lead on Eastern, Wilkes, and FDU-Florham who have identical 7-11 records in the conference. King's needs just one win in their final three games against FDU-Florham to clinch the program's first postseason appearance since 2011.
In the opener the Monarchs got on the board in the first inning when
Kyle Lupas knocked in
Chris Rebar with a double down the leftfield line. The Aggies tied the score in the seconds before King's got another run in the fifth when Rebar hit a sacrifice fly to center with the bases loaded scoring
Nick Trivigino. Delaware Valley responded in the bottom half of the inning and tied the game at two.
In the sixth King's scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead. First with the bases loaded
Christian Pack scored on a wild pitch. After
Zack Godfrey walked to reload the bases
Tom Gibbons hit a pop up into short center field that the Aggies second baseman dropped but was able to get the out at second.
Sean McKee was able to score from third on the play. The Monarchs got the final run in the seventh when
Bruce Breithaupt hit his second home run of the year.
Andrew Fisher got the complete game victory on the mound as he allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
In the nightcap the Monarchs scored four runs in the third to take the lead. McKnee scored the first run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and then
Chris Rebar knocked in the other two runner with a ground rule double to right. Breithaupt then knocked in Rebar with a sacrifice fly to center after Rebar advanced to third on a wild pitch. The Aggies scored twice in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Monarchs got another run in the fifth when Gibbons scored on a wild pitch. Delaware Valley took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the inning when they took advantage of a hit batsman and a walk to begin the inning and scored four runs on two hits to take a 6-5 lead. They then added another run in the sixth.
In the seventh inning Rebar hit a three-run homer to right center to give King's the lead back. His team-leading eighth home run of the year gave King's a 8-7 lead. However in the bottom of the inning The Aggies got a leadoff walk, a triple to right center, and then after a walk a single to right center to score the game-winning run.
Zach Palansky pitched five innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits and walked two with two strikeouts.
Chris Marconi faced eight batters and got three outs. He allowed two runs on three hits with a walk.
Anthony Peacock faced two batters and allowed a walk and a hit in relief.
Chris Rebar led the Monarchs with three hits on the day with a home run and a double. He knocked in six runs and scored three.
Bruce Breithaupt had two RBIs and a home run while
Tom Gibbons and
Sean McKee scored two runs each.
Kyle Lupas had two hits and knocked in a run.
King's will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Williamsport to face Penn College of Technology at Bowman Field at 4:30 p.m.
