MONARCH BASEBALL FALLS TO WILKES 2-0 IN SERIES OPENER
KINGSTON, PA --- The King's College baseball team fell to host Wilkes University 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Artillery Park in the first of three games between the teams this year.
Wilkes improves to 14-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play while the Monarchs falls to 11-7 overall with a 1-4 mark in conference games.
King's, playing for the first time in 10 days due to numerous postponements, struggled to string multiple hits together to score runs but were able to outhit the Colonels 8-6.
The Colonels got on the board in the first inning when Ryan Herbst hit a double down the left field line to score Jarret Clymer.
In the top of the second
Kyle Lupas and
Christian Pack hit back-to-back singles with one out but Wilkes got out of the inning when
Brad Wilkins hit into a 4-6-3 double play. In the third inning
Nick Trivigino hit a single to left center field with one out but then was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. Trivigino being called out at second proved important for the Colonels as the Monarchs next batter,
Tom Gibbons, hit a triple that would have tied the game. After a walk to
Chris Rebar the Colonels forced
Bruce Breithaupt to fly out to center to end the inning.
The Colonels scored their second run in the bottom of the inning when Herbst struck out with runners on second and third. The runner from first stole second on the strikeout as the throw was late to the bag as the runner from third raced home. The relay home was late but the Monarchs were able to get out of the inning and they threw out the runner on second trying to advance to third.
The Monarchs had an opportunity to score in the fifth when Trivigino doubled and Gibbons singled with two outs but Rebar popped up the short to end the inning. The Colonels nearly added a run in the seventh but Wilkins was able to catch a Joshua Slocum fly ball before it went over the short fence in center field robbing what would have been a home run.
Andrew Fisher pitched a complete game six hitter on the mound for King's allowing just two runs and two walks with two strikeouts.
Tom Gibbons,
Kyle Lupas, and
Nick Trivigino had two hits each for the Monarchs. Lupas extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
Bruce Breithaupt and
Christian Pack had a hit each.
Chris Nixon kept the Monarchs off-balance at the plate pitching 7.2 innings to pick up the win for the Colonels. He struck out 10 and allowed eight hits and one walk. Matt Kaster pitched the final four outs to pick up the save and struck out three and walked one.
King's and Wilkes are scheduled to finish the three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Lipo Field in Wilkes-Barre.
