KING'S FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO WILKES 2-1 ON LATE PENALTY STROKE
WILKES-BARRE -- Hayley Gayoski scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner on a penalty stroke with 1:44 remaining in regulation as the Wilkes University field hockey team edged rival King's College Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win Wilkes improved to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in MAC Freedom Conference play. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 8-8 and 3-2 in league games.
King's took a 1-0 lead with 17:19 left in the first half when Anna Morgan scored off an assist by Kelsey Gabriele.
Wilkes tied the game up with King's playing a man-down on a penalty corner when Gayoski scored off a feed from Megan Kane with 23:41 remaining. Â The game winner came when Gayoski was awarded a penalty stroke and made good on the attempt to put the Lady Colonels on top.
Wilkes outshot King's 10-8 while the Monarchs owned a 10-8 advantage in penalty corners.
King's goalie Kayla Nailor made six saves while Wilkes keeper Dallas Kendra had three stops.
King's will travel to Madison, NJ on Friday to face FDU-Florham at 7:00 PM in a rematch of the 2016 MAC Freedom title game won by King's.
