MONARCH FIELD HOCKEY SEASON ENDS WITH 8-10 RECORD
CENTER VALLEY, PA --- The King's College field hockey team saw their season come to an end on Thursday as the Monarchs fell to host DeSales 2-1 in a winner-take-all game for the fourth and final spot in next week's Freedom Conference Tournament.
King's season comes to an end with an 8-10 overall record and 3-4 mark in conference play. The Bulldogs improve to 10-7 overall and 4-3 mark in conference play with the win.
Kylie Honnick-Payne gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when she knocked in a loose ball in front of the cage. The Monarchs responded by earning a penalty corner a minute later where
Rachel Zultevicz was able to get a shot off but the shot was blocked by the Bulldog defense. King's was able to even the score late in the 18th minute when
Kelsey Gabriele scored her 13th goal of the season by knocking in a rebounded shot. The play started with
Kelley O'Keefe sending in a penalty corner in which
Sarah Zbierski was able to get off a shot that was blocked by the DeSales defense. Gabriele was able to grab the rebound and send the ball into the back of the cage.
The Monarchs pushed to take the lead in the 25th minute but a shot by
Brianna DiMaggio sailed wide. DiMaggio was able to get another shot off two minutes later but it was saved by the Bulldog keeper. The Monarchs earned another penalty corner following the saved shot and Zultevicz was able to get a shot off but it was once again blocked by the DeSales defense. The Bulldogs countered by earning a penalty corner of their own where Honnick-Payne was able to get a shot off on goal but
Kayla Nailor was there to make the save for the Monarchs. The Bulldogs retook the lead late in the 30th minute when Honnick-Payne scored her second goal of the game when she redirected a feed from Kelly Meade into the back of the cage.
King's came out strong in the second half earning three corners a couple minutes in but were able to get off a blocked shot from
Connie Mangino. The Bulldogs looked to extend their lead with three shots on goal in a seven minute span but Nailor was there to make each save. The Monarchs put together one last push to get the game-tying goal in the last 10 minutes . Gabriele was able to get a shot on goal in the 68th minute but Katarina Polyviou came up with the save to preserve the victory.
Kelsey Gabriele recorded her team-leading 13th goal of the year while
Kayla Nailor made five saves in cage.
Kylie Honnick-Payne scored both goals for DeSales while Kelly Meade had an assist. Katarina Polyviou made two saves to pick up the win in goal.
The Bulldogs outshot King's 11-9 while the Monarchs held a slim 8-7 advantage in penalty corner.
