MONARCH FIELD HOCKEY FALL TO COUGARS 3-1 IN DALLAS
DALLAS, PA --- The host Misericordia University field hockey team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat King's College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at McGeehan Field in Dallas on Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs drop their first conference game of the season to fall to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play. Misericordia improves to 4-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The Monarchs got off to a fast start when
Kelley O'Keefe was able to get a shot off just 12 seconds into the game. However her shot was blocked but King's was able to regain possession and earn a penalty corner. On the penalty corner taken by O'Keefe,
Maryrose Mauro recorded the first assist of her career when
Selina Malacari scored her fifth goal of the season to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game.
The Cougars evened the score five minutes later when Kayla Pogash found the back of the cage for Misericordia. The Monarchs had a chance to retake the lead in the 20th minute but a shot from
Sarah Zbierski off a corner from
Kelsey Gabriele went wide of cage. King's had another quality opportunity to score off of another corner by Gabriele in the 28th minute but a shot from
Brianna DiMaggio was blocked by the Cougar defense. The Misericordia defense blocked a shot from Mauro in the 34th minute and a shot from DiMaggio in the 35th minute to keep the score tied at 1 heading into halftime.
In the second half the Cougars recorded the first shot on goal but Monarch goalie
Kayla Nailor was able to make the save. The Cougars continued their strong effort to break the tie with two shots on goal in a period of two minutes but Nailor was able to keep both shots out of the back of the cage. The Monarchs responded with some offensive of their own in the 49th minute but a shot was
Anastasia Araviakis was blocked by the Cougar defense.
Misericordia broke the tie in the 62nd minute when Haley Gruber scored. Two minutes later Misericordia recorded an insurance goal when Gruber scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Colby Eldridge who had received a pass from Kailey Vogl on a penalty corner. King's fought valiantly to score receiving two penalty corners in the 68th minute but a shot from DiMaggio was saved by the Cougar keeper. The Monarchs had one last chance to score with 10 seconds left when they received a penalty corner but the Cougar defense was able to keep King's without a shot to end the game.
Selina Malacari had one goal for the Monarchs while
Maryrose Mauro recorded an assist.
Kayla Nailor made seven saves in goal.
The Cougars were led by Haley Gruber with two goals and Kayla Pogash with one. Colby Eldridge added an assist. Katelyn Campbell made one save in goal. Misericordia held a slim 13-12 shot advantage and a 12-8 advantage in penalty corners.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Keuka College in their final non-conference game of the season at McCarthy Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
