KING'S MEN'S SOCCER FALL TO ALLEGHENY 2-0
WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College men's soccer team outshot the visiting Gators of Allegheny College 12-5 but were unable to score in a 2-0 loss in the 2017 season-opener for both teams on Friday night at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
The Monarchs looked to get on the board in just the second minute of play but a shot by
Liam McLoughlin that curled just over the outstretched arms of the Gators keeper knocked off the cross bar and back into the field of play. The Gators were the benefactors of a King's own goal in the 15th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Allegheny sent a free kick from the right side into a group of players inside the box. Unfortunately for the Monarchs the ball was knocked into the goal by a defender trying to clear it out of the box. McLoughlin had another quality chance at goal in the 25th minute but the Gator keeper was able to come up with a save.
Allegheny increased their lead early in the second half when Jon Sion took advantage of a misplay in the King's defensive end of the field and was able to sneak his shot from the right side of the box into net to give the Gators a 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs fought back and had many quality shots on goal but were unable to score. In the 53rd minute
Daniel Lorandini took a free kick from around 30 yards out that the Gator keeper was just able to knock away as it seemed destined to go into the upper right corner of the net. A few minutes later Lorandini had another good look on a free kick attempt but once again David Stekla made a save to keep the Monarchs off the board.
In the 85th minute the Monarchs sent a flurry of shots on goal but were unable to get one into net. The first shot came from Lorandini followed about 10 seconds later by
Kevin Mazol whose shot was saved and it looked like McLoughlin was going to give the Monarchs their first goal of the season but his rebounded shot was blocked by a Gator defender. The Gators were able to secure the shutout when Stekla made his final save of the night in the 89th minute on a shot from
Will Brack.
The Monarchs controlled possession for much of the game and held a 12-5 advantage in shots including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goals. They also had 6 corner kicks to just two for Allegheny.
Freshman
Liam McLoughlin led King's with five shots while senior
Daniel Lorandini had four shots.
David Stekla made six saves in goal to pick up the win in goal for Allegheny.
King's will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Centenary University at McCarthy Stadium at 3:00 p.m. Centenary fell 3-1 to Scranton on Friday night.
