MONARCH MEN'S SOCCER FALL TO SUNY NEW PALTZ, 3-1
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. --- The SUNY New Paltz men's soccer team used two first half goals to defeat King's College on Saturday afternoon in New Paltz, N.Y.
The host Hawks improved to 4-3 with the victory while the Monarchs record now stands at 3-3.
The Hawks put pressure on the Monarchs early with a couple of shots on goal that
Owen Geedey was able to knock away. In the ninth minute the Hawks scored their first goal when a corner kick from Kevin Doorley was knocked into the back of the net by Sebastian Archer. Down a goal the Monarchs pushed to equalize in the 21
st minute but a shot from
Matthew Hesse was blocked, John Guzzo made a save on a header from
Brendan Raab in the 25th minute, and then a shot from
Liam McLoughlin went wide in the 29th minute. New Paltz added to their lead in the 39
th minute when Nick Comiskey found the back of the net off an assist from Coltan Goodwine. The Monarchs had one last chance to get on the board in the first half but Guzzo was able to keep a shot from
Daniel Lorandini out of goal.
In the second half the Monarchs cut the deficit in half in the 60th minute when
Zach Wolcott sent a cross into the box that McLoughlin headed into goal for his 10th goal of the year. Unfortunately for the Monarchs the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick just 30 seconds later that Ryan Martinez was able to convert to give New Paltz a two-goal advantage. The Monarchs fought valiantly over the last 30 minutes to score again but the Guzzo and the Hawks defense were able to deny all of King's attempts at goal.
Liam McLoughlin continued his impressive start to his collegiate career with a goal on three shots.
Zach Wolcott recorded his second assist of the season.
Owen Geedey made four saves in goal for the Monarchs.
The Hawks received goals from Sebastian Archer, Ryan Martinez, and Nick Comiskey. Coltan Goodwine and Kevin Doorley added assists and John Guzzo made four saves in goal to pick up the victory.
King's held a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel down the turnpike to face Cabrini University in Radnor. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Dixon Field.
